Whether granny squares are brand new to you or you just need a refresher, this workshop series will take you from the basic traditional square through modern variations, finishing techniques and joining methods.
Over 3 guided sessions, you’ll build your granny square skills step by step, then return for an additional drop-in session to practise, make more squares, or keep working on a larger project.
Session 1 — The Traditional Granny Square
We’ll begin with the foundations, including:
• Creating a magic circle
• Making a basic/traditional granny square
• Reading and following a granny square pattern
• Options for joining each new round
• Changing colours or working continuously
• Finishing and tying off your work
• When and why to block your squares
• Ideas for turning granny squares into finished projects
Session 2 — Modern Granny Squares
Now that you know the basics, we’ll explore two different modern granny square patterns and look at how small changes in stitch placement and colour can create completely different designs.
Session 3 — Finishing & Joining
Learn how to turn your individual squares into a polished project. We’ll cover:
• Different blocking methods, including blocking boards and steam blocking
• Sewing squares together
• Blanket stitch joins
• Single crochet joins
• Other options for assembling your finished squares
Bonus Drop-In Session
Come back and practise anything we covered during the workshop. Make a pile of granny squares, get help with a technique that needs a refresher, or continue working on one larger granny square project.
Materials are not included in the workshop fee. Students receive 10% off workshop supplies purchased in the shop.
This workshop is ideal for crocheters, 12 years and older who want to feel more confident with granny squares and understand not only how to make them, but how to finish and join them into larger projects. Participants must already know how to Chain, slip stitch and single crochet.
